The abalone's mother-of-pearl is composed primarily of aragonite—a crystalline form of calcium carbonate—arranged by the shell into microscopic, overlapping layers. The unique structure of these layers creates the phenomenon of iridescence, causing light to reflect at different wavelengths and produce that characteristic spectrum of colors. Abalones are marine mollusks belonging to the genus *Haliotis*; they are renowned for their extraordinary ability to cling to rocky surfaces, using a strong muscular foot that allows them to withstand even powerful wave action.
