Set in a Gothic-style wood and glass case, like an icon or a fragment of a relic, this halved nautilus shell holds within it a female face hand-painted in gouache, revealed by the iridescent reflection of the mother-of-pearl.

Mater Abyssi n.1, the Mother of the Abyss, is a pictorial homage to an ancient and unfathomable feminine principle. It is not just a face, but an apparition: a symbol of origin and mystery, like the shell itself, which, once alive, now becomes the silent guardian of a painted soul. The act of painting on mother-of-pearl—a material already perfected by nature—does not add, but reveals.

Every reflection on its iridescent surface is part of the work: the light plays with the pigments, changing the expression of the face as if it were still breathing, hidden among the currents.
