Regional variations exist among the masks of the Dan people who live in western Côte d'Ivoire and eastern Liberia but are generally characterized by a concave face, a pointed chin, a protruding mouth, an upturned nose, and a high domed forehead. . Used primarily in tourist performances today, the various Dan masks had traditional functions ranging from entertainment to initiating social control.
