Mummified turtle from the first half of the 20th century on a white marble pedestal; the species Trachemys scripta is not currently included in the appendices of the CITES Convention (i.e., it is not a CITES-listed species), and therefore is not subject to CITES certification for international trade as a protected species.
Native to North America, Trachemys scripta is now found on almost every continent. Its global spread is not natural but human-driven: for decades it was bred and sold as a pet, often released into the wild when it grew too large.
The highly developed front claws (as seen in this specimen) are typical of males and are used in courtship: the male vibrates them in front of the female’s snout in a visual-tactile ritual that is surprisingly delicate. The pedestal was added at a later time to allow for display; the items are shipped separately to protect the undercuts during transit.
Condition: mummified, good structural integrity; loss of pigmentation due to age. See photos for details.
