A unique piece of spirituality and tradition, this Nepalese shamanic mask is made of yak hide.
This extraordinary 20th-century object represents the craftsmanship and symbolism deeply rooted in the shamanic culture of the Himalayan regions.
They are traditionally made by first shaping the wood into the desired shape, then rubbing it with yak butter. Finally, yak hide is placed on top and smoked over a fire, imprinting the desired shape into the hide.
In Nepal, the shaman plays an important role in society. He wears this mask while channeling spirits, allowing him to attract benevolent ones and ward off malevolent ones.
These "good" spirits help cure illnesses and guide villagers through important life changes, such as birth, changes in social status, and death.
The mask has small imperfections and hairs due to the handmade nature of the item.
