An imposing giraffe metatarsal—a natural history specimen with a striking, dramatic presence and massive proportions.

This long giraffe metatarsal, from the hind limb, measures an impressive 73 cm. Its seemingly simple form actually reveals a highly sophisticated evolutionary history: in the giraffe, the third and fourth metatarsals have fused into a single, large, load-bearing bone—a key component of the structure that enables the extraordinary length of the animal's limbs. Over the course of their evolution, giraffes have developed exceptionally elongated legs and possess only two functional digits: the third and the fourth. The result is a limb that is both lightweight and robust, perfectly adapted to support the body of an animal that can weigh over a ton.

The specimen comes with documentation verifying its legal origin.

The pedestal shown in the photograph is not included in the listed price but may be purchased separately.
