The painting is based on a composition by Jean Steen (1628-1679).
The work depicts a tavern interior scene, where a man in a red hat is smoking a pipe while conversing with another seated man. This subject, the depiction of people drinking and smoking, was common in 17th-century Dutch art and was painted by Steen in several variations, often to illustrate proverbs about human vices or the negative example adults set for young people, as in "As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young."
