The painting is based on Teniers's 17th-century composition, now in the Curtius Museum in France.

This Flemish painting references one of the tavern scenes made famous by David Teniers the Younger, but here the focus is entirely on the figure of the smoker, one of the master's most iconic subjects. The protagonist is depicted seated in a rustic interior, immersed in a moment of everyday quiet: he smokes his pipe while eating or drinking, surrounded by a few essential objects such as a jug, a bowl, or a barrel used as a table.
