The subject of game, particularly partridges, is one of the most iconic themes of the Flemish school, developed by masters such as Jan Fyt, Frans Snyders, and Pieter Boel.

The "Mallet" work features a rich yet balanced composition: the partridges, rendered with great naturalistic precision, are placed on a surface covered with a decorated drape, following a typical Flemish still life style, where precious fabrics and refined objects interact with the living texture of the game.
