Smithsonite (named after James Smithson, the mineralogist who bequeathed the funds to establish the Smithsonian Institution) is a secondary mineral belonging to the carbonate group; it forms through the alteration and oxidation of primary zinc deposits.
Smithsonite typically appears in a variety of colors, including green, blue, pink, yellow, and brown. The green coloration—seen here in the specimen's veining—is attributed to trace amounts of copper; the resulting composition resembles a miniature alien planet.
